INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Pfizer has approved Viagra for sale in India after the drugmaker said it would cover the cost for its blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug, Cialis.
Shares of Pfizer, the world's biggest drugmaker, rose 2.8 percent in second-quarter figures, helped by strong sales for the Indian health drugmaker and the expansion of its presence in the United States and Europe.
Sales for Cialis reached $3.58 billion in the U. S. and more than $1 billion of that came from Europe, where sales are expected to exceed $3 billion in the first quarter.
Cialis was the world's biggest-selling drug in 2009, ahead of last year's best-selling drug, Viagra, which accounted for nearly one-fifth of sales.
Sales in the United States, the biggest contributor to the worldwide market, rose 3.1 percent to $3.6 billion, while the highest-selling drug in 2009 was Levitra, with $2.3 billion, accounting for nearly three-fifths of the U. sales.
Sales of the top-selling drug were on average 4 percent higher than sales for Cialis, with analysts estimating a 3.6 percent increase in sales.
For the quarter, Pfizer said sales in the U. and Europe were up 17 percent and 3 percent, respectively, and that it had made the switch to Cialis after the company reported results for September and the quarter for the second quarter.
Analysts had predicted the switch in Europe and the U. would be slower, but said the drugmaker had made a big step forward when it announced the drug's results in November.
Pfizer's sales of the top-selling drug, Viagra, grew 4 percent in the quarter to $1.5 billion. Sales of the drugs in other markets rose 13 percent to $1.3 billion.
In the U. S., sales of the top-selling drug were up 17 percent in the quarter to $1.6 billion, with an average of 2 percent higher than revenue in the same markets last year.
The U. Food and Drug Administration's approval of Cialis came on top of a Reuters analysis of the drug's performance in the third quarter, which showed a 6 percent increase in sales, compared with the previous quarter.

• Seizure medication:- carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone
• Heart or blood pressure medication:- disopyramide, amiodarone, quinidine and procainamide
• Anti-viral medication:- telaprevir, atazanavir, retonavir, indinavir, saquinavir and cobicistat
• Recreational drugs:- amyl nitrate (poppers)
